Introduction to Theories of International Relations Al-Farabi Kazakh National University

Course Overview

Course purpose: the major purposes of this course are to provide the students with the opportunity to explore international relations in a variety of ways, and to familiarize them with the major theoretical traditions, which explain the world politics. It would enable the students to grasp the main themes of the theories that have been most influential over the past two centuries.

students should be able to do the following: can formulate logic of historical development in the given period and is aware of the various approaches and theories on IR history

Course prerequisites

World history, History of the international relations, History, Foreign policy and Political system of the country of the studied region.

Grading Philosophy

Exams (25%), Activity in classromm (75%)

Course schedule

Week1: Introduction: policies, procedures, syllabus and books and resources for the course. Week2: Realism. Essentials of Realism: State, survival and self help Week3: Kinds of Realism: Structural Realism, Historical and Practical Realism, Liberal Realism.
