Applied Solid Mechanics Universiti Teknologi Malaysia

Course Overview

The course is an extension to Solid Mechanics. It aims to extend the student's knowledge and understanding of the behaviour of materials and structures under a variety of loading conditions. The course covers the plane stress and plane strain transformations, following which several elastic failure criteria are investigated. The students are expected to be able to investigate the thick cylinders, structural deformation behaviour using the energy method. This includes the instability problems of struts and elasto-plastic bending of beams. Determinate and indeterminate problems will also be examined.

Learning Achievement

1. Ability to calculate and evaluate stress and deformation of structures in normal loading, torsion and bending. 2. Evaluate failure modes and estimate fracture life of structures and component. 3. Emphasizing the aspect of designing safe components and structures.
