Course Overview

This course is designed for students to study education for international understanding in Japan. We will consider contemporary educational issues by taking as examples the education of Koreans living in Japan, the education of returnee children and students, and the education of children and students having a foreign nationality. In this course, we will first sort out the development of education for international understanding in Japan and grasp the transition of the issues. Next, as individual educational issues, we will deepen our understanding of the social changes and related measures behind the issues, taking as examples the education of Koreans living in Japan, the education of returnee children and students, and the education of children and students having a foreign nationality. In the latter half of the course, we will consider equal opportunities for education, school adaptation, retention of mother tongue, etc. as issues common to these cases, and examine the ideal way of school education corresponding to the cultural and linguistic diversity of children.
