Éloquence anglaise S4 – la prise de parole spontanée et créative University of Bordeaux

Course Overview

This course gives students the opportunity to work on their English in
a multi-disciplinary way through practical work including oral
interaction, creative speaking, and elocution in an international
context. It will be beneficial to students who will be lecturing in
English or working in English-speaking countries. 
Learning objectives: 

- Being able to formulate a well-argued review in writing about a
spontaneous and creative oral production in English, considering the
(inter)cultural context.  - Listening to and understanding a variety
of speeches in English.  - Intercultural skills (interaction,
exchange, considering different opinions and cultures).  -
Interaction skills with an audience.  - Paraverbal skills: voice,
breath/breathing, intonation, pauses, rhythm, emphasis of key words. 
- Non-verbal communication skills: co-speech gestures, facial
expressions, eye contact, posture, space management.

Level of English: B2 or above

Grading Philosophy

- Involvement (1/3 of total mark)
- Mini improvisation competition in teams (1/3 of total mark) 
- Written review of a peer group's performance (1/3 of total mark) 

Course schedule

This course will enable the students to learn the 10 basic
principles of theatrical improvisation and to apply them to take part
in an unexpected situation, in English, in a spontaneous way. 

Each workshop will generally be structured as follows:

- Body and voice warm-up as a whole group,  - basic exercises (body,
voice)  - construction exercises (character, co-construction of the
story)  - exploration exercises (fully improvised scenes)
