English in Medical Science and Technology II University of Tsukuba

Course Overview

Dependent on the module they took in the English in Medical Science and Technology I course, students will rotate through two of the following modules: Scientific Writing, Scientitific Presentation, Scientific Multimedia Communication. As in the spring semester, classes will be conducted entirely in English, so students will also hone their listening skills. Upon completion of the course, students will have a foundation for sharing their knowledge and ideas with other scientists in English.

Scientific Writing Module (rotation)
1. Introduction section; Punctuation
2. Methods section; Word choice
3. Results section; Verbs
4. Discussion section; Redundancy
5. Module test

Multimedia Communication Module (rotation)
Week 6 Unit 1: Introduction - "Science isn't finished until it is communicated"
Week 7 Unit 2: Visual Communication - "A picture is worth a thousand words"
Week 8 Unit 3: Directing and Camera Work - "Remember to turn on the light"
Week 9 Unit 4: Video Editing - "The greatest editors go unnoticed"
Week 10 Unit 5: Video Submission and Assessment

Scientific Presentation Module (rotation)
Week 6 Getting started (preparing the script)
Week 7 First practice (effective verbal delivery)
Week 8 Second practice (effective visual delivery)
Week 9 Recording your presentation
Week 10 Giving feedback on presentations
Students will rotate through the 2 modules not taken in Spring Semester.
