Fundamental Biology Laboratory University of Tsukuba
Course Overview
生物学の各分野から、生物資源学類に必要な観察・実験の項目を選んで実施し、生命現象の基本について理解させる。
Learning Achievement
Acquire the professional knowledge, techniques and basic skills of bioresource research through observations and experiments. Essential guide for beginners to learn basic analytical methods of biopolymer, such as DNA and proteins.
Competence
1. Systematic knowledge 2.professional knowledge, techniques and basic skills 3. Constructive discussions and deepened problem awareness
Course prerequisites
Grading Philosophy
Participants must attend all lectures unless there is a special reason. Participants are requested to submit reports for all issues including absence. Then, an evaluation score corresponding to the grade of report will be acquired.
Course schedule
Guidance Introduction of teaching staffs, explanation of experimental contents and general instructions. Here one should be carefully watch the video about how to operate laboratory equipment. Observation of plant morphology Learn the possible functions of external morphological characters, and how to handle an optical microscope. (Teaching Staff: Dr. NORMURA)Extract DNA from the tissue of seed, leaf or fruit. (Teaching Staffs: Dr. FURUKAWA and Dr. WANG)Estimate the quality and quantity of isolated DNA by gel electrophoresis. (Teaching Staffs: Dr. FURUKAWA and Dr. WANG)Observations of morphology and behaviors of mites Examine your sample of house dust through a microscope for tiny animals called dust mites and draw what they look. Recognize the differences between mites and other animals such as insects. Observe the beHypothesis-based biological control You will become able to logically infer a method (= hypothesis) to achieve the desired control and design an experiment to verify it at a rudimentary level. (Teaching Staffs: Dr. YAWATA and Dr. TAKESHITA)Protein Perform polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis to learn how to separate proteins depending on their molecular weight and to understand the presence of diverse proteins in cells. (Teaching Staffs: Dr. HIRAKAWA and Dr. HAGIWARA)
