Course Overview

This course aims at examining various emerging legal issues in the context of the current networked society – by looking into various statutes and court cases concerning information. The course will provide an overview of selective laws on the internet and other related topics in Japan – i.e., including: Copyright Act, Unfair Competition Prevention Act, Acts on the Protection of Personal Information and other related laws, etc. From a viewpoint of information ethics, having a regard to laws is expected in order to protect social norms. This course aims at building a basic understanding on laws regarding information, e.g., how to develop better legal systems and law cases, with the aim to deepen the knowledge from a wide range of perspectives. This course will also provide technical aspects of information security and intellectual property.

The objectives of this course are to provide students with an understanding of the basic legal system on information ? by looking into relevant statutes and court cases concerning information. They also includes technical aspects of information security and intellectual property.

Course prerequisites

Grading Philosophy

Five quizzes and two reports will be required for evaluation.
The evaluation items of the report are scored as problem understanding, lesson understanding, logical consistency, investigation (precedents, cases, etc.), and formal aspects.
The overall score is 50% for the five quizzes and 50% for the two reports.
A score of 60 or higher is passed.
