Course Overview

This course will cover the language knowledge (writing system, vocabulary, grammar, sentence patterns, etc.) necessary for students to communicate about themselves, their families, things happening around them, and other things directly related to themselves, as well as familiar cultural topics.

Learning Achievement

To be able to understand the language knowledge (writing system, vocabulary, grammar, sentence patterns) necessary for exchanging
information about familiar, everyday topics such as personal information, shopping, and travel.

Competence

Course prerequisites

Students should have Japanese ability of CEFR A1; close to level A2 is ideal.

Grading Philosophy

Class participation 10%, Assignments (Homework) 30%, Final exam 60%

Orientation; Talk about yourself including details such as hobbies and the meaning behind your name (L1)
Order at a restaurant and say what you cannot eat (L3)
Give advice about travel and talk about trips you have been on (L5)
Ask questions at a staff meeting (L7)
Talk about how you spent your holidays (L9)
Explain what you want to buy and why (L11)
Talk briefly about a famous place (L13)
Talk about eco-friendly activities you engage in (L15)
Talk briefly about a famous person (L17)
Final exam
