Japanese 8 Reading A (Advanced) University of Tsukuba

Course Overview

Students will employ comprehensive reading skills and speed reading skills in order to read texts with a high degree of specialization. They will also comprehend the logical progression
characteristic of each type of text. In addition, students will: be able to point out the author's main points; identify opposing sides of an argument in complicated texts; participate in group
discussions based on their understanding of the text; as well as make presentations about the texts.

Learning Achievement

The aim of this course is to improve advanced reading skills. Students will be provided with texts from many genres including both academic and literary. By the end of the course, students will be expected to be able to recognize stylistic features and organization of the texts, and to understand the main argument and author’s intention. They will participate in group discussion in order to enhance their comprehension.

Competence

Course prerequisites

Students have to certify this subject fits their level by taking the placement test (http://ttbj-tsukuba.org/) or by passing a subject one level below this subject. Kanji level of 6 or higher is desirable.

Grading Philosophy

Homework assignments(35%), Small tests(35%), Final report(30%)
Note that grades from A+ to C are to be determined based on the total score.
