Kanji 2 B University of Tsukuba

Course Overview

Students will learn the form and structure of kanji and how to distinguish between parts such as radicals and phonetic components. They will also the study both the Japanese and Chinese readings of the kanji. They will be able to look up the kanji that they see often in everyday life and devise strategies for remembering them. (BKB L11-22)

Learning Achievement

Students will be able to understand the form and structure of kanji and recognize parts such as index (bushu) and pronunciation (onpu). They will also learn about the Japanese reading (kunyomi) and Chinese reading (onyomi) of kanji. They will learn how to look up kanji they encounter in school and in everyday situations, and devise ways to remember them. (Covers Lessons 11 to 22 of Basic Kanji Book Vol.1)

Course prerequisites

Students must be in Level Comprehensive Japanese 2 or higher. It is desired that they can write hiragana and katakana and have completed Level kanji 1 or have an equivalent level.

Homework 30%, Quizzes 20%, Midterm test 25%, Final test 25%

Homework will be regularly given. Students are expected to learn kanji through classroom drills and homework, being conscious of the kanji they see at school and in daily life, and thinking of their meaning and reading.
Exchange students who are tokubetsu choukougakusei (gakugun or undergraduate students) can join the class. Please inquire at the International Student Center for details.
