Kanji 3 A University of Tsukuba

Course Overview

Students will learn elementary kanji vocabulary, and how to distinguish correctly between kunyomi (Japanese) and onyomi (Chinese) readings. They will be able to read easy reading materials that use kanji, and write simple sentences using kanji. (BKB L23-35)

Learning Achievement

Students will be able to remember elementary level Kanji and differentiate 'Kun Yomi' (Japanese readings) and 'On Yomi' (Chinese readings). They will also be able to read easy reading material that have Kanji, and write simple sentences using Kanji.

Course prerequisites

Students must be in Level Comprehensive Japanese 2 or higher. It is desired that they can write Hiragana and Katakana and have completed Level Kanji 2 or have an equivalent level.

Grading Philosophy

Homework 20%, Quizzes 30%, Final test 50%
(Attendance rate of 70% or higher is required)

Week 16: Final test
Lessons 23 to 35 of Basic Kanji Book Vol. 2 will be covered for the entire semester.

Homework will be regularly given. Students are expected to actively use the Kanji they've learned to read and write sentences.
The class will be flexible according to the students' level and needs, and changes will be made to exercises, tasks, and assignments.
