Kanji (Beginner) 2-1A University of Tsukuba

Course Overview

Students will learn the form and structure of kanji and distinguish between parts such as radicals and phonetic components. They will also study both the Japanese and Chinese readings of the kanji. They will be able to look up the kanji that they see often in everyday life and devise strategies for remembering them. (BKB L11-22)

Learning Achievement

Students will be able to understand the form and structure of kanji and recognize parts such as index (bushu) and pronunciation (onpu). They will also learn about the Japanese reading (kunyomi) and Chinese reading (onyomi) of kanji. They will learn how to look up kanji they encounter in school and in everyday situations, and devise ways to remember these.

Competence

Course prerequisites

Students have to certify this subject fits their level by taking the placement test (http://ttbj-tsukuba.org/).
It is desired that they can write hiragana and katakana.

Grading Philosophy

Homework 10%, Quizzes 20%, Final test 70%
(Attendance rate of 70% or higher is required)
Note that grades from A+ to C are to be determined based on the total score.
