Learning and Communication in Museums Ruhr-Universität Bochum
Course Overview
The seminar examines the approaches to understanding the museum visitor. It presents the challenges that museums today face in regard with providing access to diverse publics, forming meaningful and rich learning experiences, and engaging their audiences. What do people when they visit museums, and how their practices are connected to learning? How can museums contribute to different communities? We will focus on visitors’ behavior, identity, and motivation, as well as possible barriers to engagement and learning. The seminar also touches upon participatory practices and digital tools adopted by museums. Through reading and discussing texts, as well as critically analysing empirical cases, we will explore how learning in embedded in social processes in museums and how research and evaluation can inform museum activities.
