Molecular genetics and epigenetics Université Grenoble Alpes
Course Overview
This course concerns all the students interested in gene expression across the tree of life: bacteria, lower (yeast, protozoans) and higher eukaryotes (plants, mammalian). It is complementary to the M1 course “Cell Compartmentalization and Implications in Pathology”. You will gain further knowledge on the mechanisms involved in the control of gene expression in the general context of gene regulation. The course will present the new developments for the analysis and control of gene expression. This will include in vitro and in vivo approaches that can be usedin cells and living organisms. A specific emphasis will be given to new aspects of gene regulation at a transcriptional and post-transcriptional level (RNA maturation and transport). The role of epigenetic regulation involving DNA methylation, post-translational histone modification, long and short non-coding RNA and histone variants in the control of gene expression will also be addressed. The broad range of model organisms (human, mouse, plants, yeast, bacteria…) and questions addressed in this course makes it a “must take” for those interested in evolution, development, cell differentiation, senescence, infectious diseases and pathologies such as cancer. Therefore, this course is strongly recommended as a preparation to the PHED and NN Master 2 programs.
