Organic Structural Chemistry I University of Tsukuba
Basic organic chemistry course covering synthetic methods, physico-chemical properties, structures and most characteristic examples of reactivity for the major classes of organic compounds. The following classes of the most fundamental classes of organic compounds will be studied: alkanes, alkenes, aromatic compounds (arenes). Discussion for each new class of organic compounds will start with its classification, then will be discussed the nomenclature rules (both commmon and IUPAC), most important synthetic methods, and finally most fundamental examples of their reactivity. Particular emphasis will be given to mechanisms of the reactions, such as nucleophilic substitution, elimination, electrophilic additition, and aromatic electrophilic substitution. Application of these classes of organic compounds in organic synthesis and industry will be also discussed, particularly for aromatic compounds. This intensive lecture course will be completed with the final examination in the form of written test. Each student will be given a set of problems for each class of organic compounds studied, for which the student should give an answer. Based on the results of this final examination, the student will be given a mark (grade).
