Politics of the Contemporary Middle East University of Tsukuba

Course Overview

This course provides an overview of politics of the contemporary Middle East. We will examine the major political developments in the region from the Ottoman period to the present, including the impact of the West, democratic deficit and religious movement, various nationalism and related conflicts, and more. We will consider a number of different aspects of domestic politics and the ways in which a variety of factors such as oil, persistent authoritarianism and foreign intervention has affected it. We will also explore the refugee issue which is a significant strain on the area.
