Course Overview

This course discusses information services for public from the two phases of a specific community and social system focusing on empowerment of participants/users. In the first part, this course deals with lifelong learning activities and examines public libraries as system for access to information, media and culture through a perspective of Community, cultural diversity and social justice. Next, various aspects of universal service in public libraries are discussed, and a society in which everyone can use information equally. In the last part, you learn about the practical theory and method through the process of planning the place, proposal making, manual preparation, presentation on your research for information sharing.

Learning Achievement

Through the course, students will be able to:
-acquire skills of information services for public
-appreciate practices and theories of public libraries and identify information services for public in cultural organizations.
-understand a significance of universal services in public libraries and explain and put them into practice.
-understand and practice the theory and method for technical communication

Course prerequisites

Grading Philosophy

Assignments will be given based on course objectives and graded by the following policy.
Yoshida: In-class mini assignments(10%), First assignment(80%) and Second assignment(10%). First assignment is evaluated from four items (understanding of course contents, accuracy of written content, development of argument, originality).
Takeda: In-class mini examinations (50%), Assignment (50%). This assignment is evaluated from 1) fulfillment of assignment requirements, 2) logicality of description, and 3) understanding of course contents.
Sannami: The rate of evaluation shall be 25% for each assignment. Assignments will be evaluated from the evaluation items (understanding and reflection of assignments, degree of fulfillment of submissions).
Each lecturer evaluates the scores on a 100-point scale, which are then combined and graded on a 5-point scale from A+ to D, with a grade of C or above as a pass.
