Course Overview

This course is the introduction to academic research and publishing in informatics. The goal is to acquire basic knowledge and skills required for researchers. It showcases some of the research projects in a variety of domains, and addresses some of the important topics in research activites, such as documentation, research ethics, brainstorming, collaboration, and presentation. We also show some of the useful tools for researchers.

Learning Achievement

This course is the introduction to academic research and publishing. The goal is to acquire basic knowledge and skills required for researchers. It showcases some of the research projects in a variety of domains, and addresses some of the important topics in research activites, such as documentation, research ethics, brainstorming, collaboration, and presentation. We also show some of the useful tools for researchers.In the end of this course, participants are expected to (1) understand how to plan and conduct research projects in different domains, (2) understand issues in five important topics in research: documentation, researh ethics, brainstorming, collaboration, and presentation, and (3) know how to use tools for researchers that help us in the process of conducting research.

Course prerequisites

Grading Philosophy

Each student has to submit a report or give a talk on each of five topics, based on the practices in each class. Your overall course grade will be determined as the average grade for the five reports or talks.
More precisely, Small Report and Presentation at Each Class (60%), Active Engagement of Class Discussion 40%
Reports will be evaluated in terms of the level of understanding of each class. The level of understanding of class 1 (e.g., Documentation 1) will be evaluated in the conversation question in each of class 2 (e.g., Documentation 2), too.

To acquire the credits, the students should submit all the reports, give all the presentations and be scored more than 60 points out of 100 points in total.

Brainstorming 1: Learn a research project and then learn how to brainstorm and organize ideas for academic research. (Seung Hee Lee)

Collaboration 1: Learn how to collaborate with other researchers using collaboration tools (Google Drive, Dropbox, Overleaf, Skype, Slack, Notion, etc.). (SunKyoung Kim)
Collaboration 2: Learn how to use the collaboration tools in research projects through practice. (SunKyoung Kim)
Presentation 1: Learn a research project and then learn how to make slides for your talk on academic research, from visual communication perspectives, such as fonts, colors, and balances.(Sangtae Kim)
