Course Overview

“Transnational Literary Studies” does not only comprise literature (and other media) that is produced across borders and in various languages (including translation), it also analyzes the common multi-lingual and multi-cultural basis inherent in aesthetic productivity. The focus point of this course is on text, author, genre, period, aesthetics, media, methods or translation, depending on the needs and interests of its participants and the research focus of the instructor.

1) Practice the interpretation of contemporary literature
2) Understand and practice rhetorical and linguistic tools for textual analysis
3) Recognize argumentative structures
4) Recognize literary themes and develop their analysis
5) Understand intertextuality (theory and practice)
6) Understand basic trends in contemporary literature
7) Learn about the European theatrical tradition
8) Become familiar with contemporary theater: post-dramatic/post-figural
9) Learn to critically review psychoanalysis
10) Practice critical thinking

Course prerequisites

Grading Philosophy

Participants are expected to actively and lively participate in class discussions (60%).
Depending on size of class and interest, participants are expected to give one presentation (this would be 20% of the above 60%).
Participants are expected to prepare reading material and connect learning elements outside of class (10%).
A Final Paper will be graded. (30%)

Course schedule

This class is an exercise in interpretation of contemporary literature.
Participants are expected to read and prepare texts for discussions in class.
