Course Overview

Students will enrich their knowledge of Japanese by learning about variations of the Japanese language including dialects and expressions and vocabulary according to gender, social positions, and character.

Learning Achievement

Students will be able to:
・learn about variations of the Japanese language including dialects and expressions and vocabulary according to gender, social positions, and character and broaden perspective for Japanese.
・deepen their knowledge of the language and enjoy using Japanese.
・collect and summarize necessary data and information through various means.

Course prerequisites

Students have to certify this subject fits their level by taking the placement test (http://ttbj-tsukuba.org/) or by passing a subject one level below this subject.
Students must be in level 4 or 5.

Grading Philosophy

Class performance (including oral presentation) 30%, Task and Assignments (including final report) 35%, Quizzes 25%, Active participation 10%
(Attendance rate of 70% or higher is required)
Note that grades from A+ to C are to be determined based on the total score.

Course schedule

・A detailed schedule will be handed out on the first day of classes.
・Students will complete and submit tasks and assignments.
・Students will create a compilation of useful words and phrases of Japanese dialects for travelers. They will also make a presentation about it in groups.
・TV dramas and animation will be used as learning material.

・Attendance to the first meeting is a must for those who intend to enroll in the course.
・It is hoped that students show flexibility and actively tackle assignments as they are expected to work independently in research and carrying out tasks.
・They are expected to be independent, active, and cooperative in group work.
・They will also be expected to use Japanese as much as they can outside of the classroom.
・The class content may change according to the number of enrolled students, their level and needs.
・Students should keep a folder for filing handouts which will be distributed every meeting.
