Social nature

Understanding coupled natural/environmental and human systems is fundamental to the quest for sustainability. But, what is “nature” or “environment”, or what are environmental issues? In this lecture, nature, environment, and envrionmental issues are discussed as a social construct subject to changing perceptions. To bridge the gap between natural and social students, theories and concepts from both, natural sciences and social sciences, are presented, which are relevant for human-environment interaction research. Climate change as a current threat is discussed from the natural science perspective as well as from deeply entrenched social worldviews to explore a complex environmental problem from a cross-disciplinary perspective. The goals is to equip students with perspectives and a language that can be used in cross-disciplinary research teams. This helps students to learn how to frame their research to communicate their own interests effectively with researchers of other disciplines and with public. Agro-Biomedical Science Group seminar

There is a wide range of issues associated with food and health from familiar problems to global issues. In this group seminar, each student group survey food and health issues, and propose the solution idea to solve a particular issue. Specifically, each group will first identify “issues related to food and health” and investigate the social, scientific, and business backgrounds related to the issues. Then, based on the research, they will put together a proposal for solving the issue, including elements of research, social practice, and business value, and make a group presentation. In addition to research and discussion by student groups, the group seminar will include excursions to related companies and research institutes, and business thinking training. Basic Molecular Nutrition

We take the nutrients necessary for life support through our diet, overload and deficiency of the nutrients impair health. It is also little doubt that chemicals contaminated in water and foods affect human health, resulting in occurrence of a variety of diseases. In this lecture, first of all, the students will learn 1) fundamental biochemistry (e.g., metabolism and synthesis) of the five major nutrients (carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, vitamins, and minerals) in the body, 2) role of such nutrients in the body development/maintenance and aging, 3) onset of various diseases caused by excessive and deficient the nutrients, and 4) intake of the nutrients from food. Law, Public Policy and Business Strategy regarding Cultural and Creative Industries

Creative industries are sectors of organized activity whose principal purpose is the production, promotion, distribution and/or commercialization of goods, services and activities of a cultural, artistic or heritage-related nature. Creative industries not only generate economic wealth at the national and regional levels but also produce cultural values and identity that are indispensable for humankind. Creative industries can promote nation or regional branding and soft power.
What exist in the core of creative industries are cultural values or products that can be protected as intellectual property. Intellectual property rights to cultural values or products support a diverse range of business activities in creative industries.
While capturing these characteristics from a wider perspective, this course aims to give students an opportunity to gain the basic knowledge of intellectual property strategy, together with business strategy insights as well as legal and industrial policy perspectives, regarding several selected sectors of the creative industries. In this course, you are expected to gain the following knowledge:
• analytical viewpoints for the analysis of government policies for cultural and creative industries (CCI);
• the basic structure of the copyright system that supports various types of business practices in the CCI field, including art, film, music, animation, and
publishing;
• legal points in relation to activities that generate creative or artistic works in the CCI field;
• various types of business strategies in accordance with legal and policy frame- works for the promotion of art and media entertainment contents;
